Accelerated Degree Programs - What is an Accelerated Degree Program?

Many individuals today are looking into an accelerated degree option that they can find online. The truth is that there are many different accelerated program options that are out there, and they provide many different advantages.

It's important to know what you're getting involved with before you get started with one however. Therefore you should take a look at what an accelerated degree really is and how you can go about pursuing one.

An accelerated program for a degree is simply a degree program that allows you to complete it at a quicker pace. The typical Bachelors degree takes 4 years for completion. However, with an accelerated degree you can finish all of the same coursework in just 2 years, and in many cases even less than that.

So with an accelerated program you can cut your time by more than half. That means that you're that much closer to getting that new job or starting that new career. For people who are anxious to get moving towards career advancement and job fulfillment, an accelerated option is therefore a great idea.

Most accelerated program options are offered online. This means that you take all of your courses through an online format and you're responsible for learning from home. In and of itself, online learning provides many different advantages, such as convenience and flexibility.

Therefore an accelerated degree provides the same advantages as well. For example with an online program you don't have to worry about commuting or living near the school of your choice. You can study from any school throughout the world while never leaving the comfort of your home. You can take your classes and complete your work at any time of the day or week, ensuring you can maintain your current schedule instead of having to quit or alter your job, or put aside your other responsibilities.

Of course, online learning isn't for everybody. Many people miss out on the true college feel of an on-campus institution. Other people simply can't motivate themselves sufficiently or stay on top of all of their work from a home online environment. Therefore you have to consider if you will really thrive with this kind of program before diving in.

Another possible disadvantage of an accelerated degree is that some people can't move from one topic to the next so quickly. Additionally, some people can't handle the constant heavy course load. To complete a full degree program in less than two years requires you to stay busy with many classes at once, and classes all throughout the year without long breaks. If this isn't appealing to you then you should not pursue an accelerated program.

Most people find that the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. The possibility to start a completely new degree and finish it in less than two years is just too tantalizing to pass up. If you're ready for a new job or a new career, or you just want to go back to school to finish what you started, then an accelerated degree is your quickest path to success.

Online Nursing Degree Programs Expand

The impending shortage of students entering school for a nursing degree has caused a demand for nurses that continues to spread across the U.S. healthcare system. Many providers of classroom-based and online education are developing programs that can help professionals in the field earn advanced degrees without sacrificing their career development.

The University of Nevada system has announced a partnership between two of its schools to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, the Las Vegas Sun reports. System branches in Reno (UNR) and Las Vegas (UNLV) will each provide faculty members who will teach courses in the 39-credit program, which is intended to prepare nursing students for administrative positions.

While enrollees will be required to travel to UNR's Orvis School of Nursing once per year to participate in orientations and projects, coursework and lectures will be offered in an online format. Marc Johnson, UNR's provost, told the media outlet that the program aims to help students obtain leadership positions at hospitals, as well as in public health clinics and companies.

A similar program has been launched at Wilkes University, where school officials have announced they will begin offering a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree this year. The program, which will begin this summer, will be available online to accommodate the schedules of busy nursing professionals. Degree candidates will also be required to complete a weeklong residency.

After the launch of the new degree, Wilkes will be among the 15 percent of nursing education programs in U.S. that offer this certification. This has the potential to be a huge boon in the nursing field.

The Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania-based school created the program to address the fact that all new advanced practice nurses will be expected to be educated to the doctoral level within the next five years, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Nurses who hold a master's degree will be able to earn the degree in as few as two and a half years. Bachelor's degree holders who enroll in the program part-time are expected to finish in approximately five years. Bernard Graham, dean of the university's Nesbitt College of Pharmacy and Nursing, said earning a doctoral degree will put "nursing on a par with other health professions."

The Costs of Distance Learning and How to Save for Online Degree Programs

Going to college is expensive, and that might be the understatement of the year. Although online colleges are very different from brick and mortar colleges, one thing about distance learning remains the same - you'll need to plan for money for college. Many people stamp a stereotypical image onto their idea of college on the Internet, and unfortunately, these untrue images are often ones of illegitimate, easy programs that are basically just diploma mils. However, this could not be any farther from the truth. Most online colleges are legitimate, and to go with this great education are appropriate costs.

In fact, some virtual colleges cost more than real world schools. Tuition is the most major expense. Online colleges charge a tuition fee that covers that knowledge you'll be gaining, and you may be confused at the low price. If online education is just as legitimate as a typical college, why are the tuition bills lower? Well, what you may not realize in that a brick and mortar college, your tuition goes towards more than just the professor salaries and technology costs - you're paying for utilities, new buildings, student organizations, and other on-campus activities that you don't have to pay for when your college is online.

However, that doesn't mean that online colleges are inexpensive. You still have to pay for tuition, and in addition, you'll need books and other study material. Online education also requires a fairly up to date computer complete with the needed software, and you'll have to pay for reliable Internet that is fast enough to participate in chat and easily download large files.

Some students also choose to purchase cell phones or blackberries that can connect to the Internet in order to be able to participate in distance learning while away from home. Likewise, you may want to purchase a laptop if you currently use a desktop so that you can complete class homework and stay in touch with school even if you have to travel.

The good news is that online financial aid is available to help students pay for college. The key here is to make sure that the online college program you choose is accredited. Most college scholarship opportunities will not give money to students who cannot prove that they are applying to or currently a student at an accredited college. The problem here is that some people who say they want money for college really just want money. They create fake colleges to try to apply for online financial aid, which they then use however they want. This takes away money that could be used by real students for needed online education. With distance learning it is a good idea to only work with accredited programs anyway. Some online college scams take your money and then disappear. Others are diploma mills that don't really provide a quality education.

College scholarships, however, are available to help pay for online programs in most cases. You can find money for college in the same places as traditional student find online financial aid, or you can apply to opportunities specific to your online college. Of course, government loans and grants may still be applicable, so apply to as many financial aid opportunities as possible!

Also, don't forget that college scholarships aren't the only way to fund your online education. While many college scholarships provide full tuition for at least a semester, these programs are extremely competitive and many may not be available to non-traditional students who are using distance learning as a way to get a degree after many years of being out of high school. Need money for college in another way? Look beyond online financial aid.

Start with monitoring your online education spending. You have to purchase things like books, calculators, and a computer, but you don't have to pay full price! When distance learning gets expensive, find deals that can work to your advantage. You can find money for college in what you save. For example, there are some great online websites, such as Amazon.com, that sell textbooks for a fraction of the price. Also, check out your local libraries. You may be able to borrow the books you need, especially if your courses require you to read novels. On top of that, family members are a great source for other borrowed materials that you can use for your online education, such as rulers and binders. Of course, don't forget to tell your accountant that you're a student again. Even if you don't get any online financial aid to help with your distance learning, there may be certain tax benefits that apply to you!

The bottom line is that college scholarships may not cover your expenses. Think outside of the box to find money for college. Online financial aid is possible, but don't fall into the trap of believing that online education and distance learning is a cheap alternative to a traditional college. You'll need a good amount of money for college, even if you'll be going to school online from home.
